I had the good fortune to be hired to teach math at my former Jr. High in Evanston, Skiles Jr. High. Our principal, Charlie Thomas, was a teacher I knew from Evanston High School. Math for 5th-8th graders was especially challenging from two viewpoints, my students were very active during class and the material, new math, even I didn't understand that well. While my teaching career was short lived, one year, the commitment of my fellow teachers to their students and their profession was awesome. Many of the parents were totally committed to supporting their children which was highlighted by their active participation in parent teacher conferences. During this time I also started my military service in the Army reserves. From teaching I went into the family businesses, merchandising, were we owned and operated a chain Ben Franklin Variety Stores throughout the midwest, serviced discount retailers including Venture and Target Stores with our sewing notions jobbing company, then on to the family's real estate development business. During all these times, my wife, regular swimming and exercise routines helped keep me centered and healthy.

Helga and I started dating while I was teaching, fell and stayed in love, raised three awesome daughters and celebrated our 55th anniversary last year. In 2011 Helga's ovarian cancer was very aggressive. Chemotherapy was debilitating such that she was unable to stand on her feet, much less walk. So as time went on we took up walking together, looked at her Garmin clipped on her hip pocket, and realized the benefits of stepping out and moving. Now we are on to our nation's youth to share this program with them and provide them the tools to realize the benefits of stepping out and moving forward, into a better and healthier future.
